Doom Game
« on: September 23, 2008, 07:25:14 PM »
Hi, I thought I would post a link I found for Doom.

http://trendtac.hyves.nl/forum/2288201/5A5P/Extras_Games/

You can download the original shareware wad file from here

http://blastmagazine.com/the-magazine/technology/2008/04/download-doom1wad/

I placed the above doom1wad into the /share/games/doom folder, and the game does work.

Solved it so I thought I'd share for those who don't..

I installed XTerm and Midnight Commander from here

Once installed, run Xterm and type 'mc' - you should get an explorer-type interface from which you can move files about...just copy the wad file from wherever you saved it to /share/games/doom. Nice.` ;D

HTH!

Cant you just do it using the file manager program that is already installed on the machine? I cant try it as I don't have the machine with me.

The built-in file manager only allows you to view 'My Documents' and its subfolders as well as any USB memory devices. You cannot get into any system folders etc.

Sleepie,

You don't say what problem you are having!
Does the Doom icon show in the "Play" tab of your desktop?
If I recall correctly Doom requires other files (SDL mixer etc.) to be installed also.
They are all on the linked page.

Follow fu53b0x's instructions earlier in this thread and all should be OK.
Good luck,
Martin

Martin's right

Owing to the fact that I am a 70s computer kid who built his ZX81  :-[ , I confess that I will install anything just to see what happens...and thus, I have SDL (SDL, mixer & net) installed but I am not sure if there are other dependencies

:aside: I have successfully installed the Fluxbox GUI which is nice and clean (I did brick the machine in the process but nothing that the command line, google, time and a beer couldn't solve!)

Ahhhhhh! Those heady days of DIY hardware. I started with a Microtan 75 with all of 1K (yes 1K) of RAM which had no means of saving any program I managed to enter  using the HEX only keypad..........The youngsters these days don't know what they missed  ::)

I can't have it working...It drives me crazy! I put the wad file where you suggested.I have installed the .info file with the Software installer, and the icon appeared on the desktop.
But when I start it I get the message : "The application you start encounters an error."
What have I done wrong? Do I ?
Or do I have all the 3 files at all?? (wad/info/xap)
HELP please!!
