Which compiler did you use? Because I installed debian, added the repository to /etc/apt/sources.list but it can't find the gcc3.3 packages. I've found out that the problem is the difference between te versions of gcc so I'm a bit stuck now.
Do you still have the compile environment running? Maybe you can compile the tarball for me?

Thanks, I'll set up a etch vm tonight and try that repository and see what happens!
I'll get back to you asap:)

You donĀ“t need to install Etch, I think. Just add the source to your sources.lst, run update, and install gcc-3.3-mipsel and other stuff

I had to install etch, because it had dependencies problems (version numbers in debian 5.0). But I've just installed gcc 3.3 in the VM and now downloading the kernel headers on this machine (i was compiling on a remote vps, so it takes a while). I'll keep you (and anyone else) posted. And when I manage to compile the driver i'll put it online.

The compiler works great now, but the compiled module doesn't... it gives me a unresolved symbol _gp_disp error when trying to insmod... I think i have the wrong kernel sources then.. (at least that's what some googling around made me think)

According to the MIPS Faq it's not the kernelsource, but the compilerflags.
Quote
Insmod complains about the _gp_disp symbol being undefined

_gp_disp is a magic symbol used with PIC code on MIPS. Be happy, this error message saved you from crashing your system. You should use the same compiler options to compile a kernel module as the kernel makefiles do. In particular the options -mno-pic -mno-abicalls -G 0 are important.
I suggest you to build one of the kernelmodules (make modules in the kerneldirectory), test if the module will load on your box, and if yes, compare the CFLAGS settings in the module makefiles.

Morning,

have you solved your trouble ?

i have the same ralink usb wifi card in my notebook and am trying to have the wifi working.
i have compiled on rt73.o module which load correctly in the kernel but for the moment the node device is not create (no /dev/wlan0 or /dev/rausb0) so am not sure about my kernel module.
(here is my module -- http://dl.free.fr/pA1WKYKBA -- )

if you have a compiled module or any informations am interest of that.

thank in advance for your help
mna.

Hello everybody. Maybe this could help you (it worked for me) if :
- you own a Skytone Alpha 400 or equivalent (epc700...)
- you installed Wicknix's 3MX-Ultra distibution.
- wifi doesn't work because your computer wifi card is a Ralink instead of a Zydas.

Files and folder ppp-wireless ; wireless-lan ; Wireless ; rt73.o are from skytone's "Recovery system for french" (available at http://www.skytone.net.cn/en/download_show.php?id=2&smallclass=12&article_id=149)
They can be found here : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4L2T2NPE

0 - If it's not already done, install 3MX distibution
1 - Copy ppp-wireless & wireless-lan in /bin (they will replace those from 3MX).
2 - Copy the Wireless folder in /etc
3 - Copy rt73.o in /lib/modules/2.4.20-celf3/kernel/drivers-extend
4 - Reboot
5 - Enjoy

I thank Wicknix for his great work.

it's working like a charm  :D

many thanks for your help.

to be technically precise i have some behaviour using WPA TKIP on some router ...
but it's perfectly working on the principal wlan access.

thanks again.

Thanks for the fix! Also mirrored your package on 3mx.taita.co.uk in the 'extras' folder.
