My Car PC idea

This is an idea I have to build a Car PC.

This is dependant on the how easy it is to modify the software and the overall build of these laptops. So I will post it here in case I have a change of heart.

I was going to get the original ONE+ and just use the tablet.

Try to install a touch screen inside, like:  http://beta.ivancover.com/wiki/index.php/Eee_PC_Internal_Upgrades#Touch_screen

Connect a GPS unit (Which I have at home, just need the USB cable)

Then build the software I need to run on the PC, I have seen a distro somewhere, but I will probably build my own software on top of the base OS supplied.

I am not going to embed it into the dash, yet. But I may do if I can find the right person. But this is the idea. http://www.timekiller.org/carpc/

I have heard that the manufacturer has released a 2.6 kernel for the device, even though the Elonex ones use a 2.4 kernel.

I haven't started yet.

I have just been involved in a massive project, at work, and also looking at cutting a version of Debian etch for the OneT+, so this is still a valid idea. Just need to find time to get it started.

wouldn't it be easier to get windows ce working on it?

Can't Windows CE is going to be any better. Also the legalities of hacking a non-free OS onto this device.

The One and OneT use a MIPS processor, Windows CE etc uses an X386 processor, so can't be run....

This has to be remembered when putting Linux stuff on.....

Never knew the ONE was x86! That makes a heck of difference with what can be done!

I'm surprised there hasn't been more distros for the ONE as it's x86 based.

It's probably insane but I wonder if anyone has thought about trying to install Windows 2000 on to one of the 2GB models?

I'm sure I've read in a few places the ONE is x86 based, such as here: http://sites.google.com/site/unofficialelonexone/hardware-comparison-1

But to be honest I have no 'official' evidence and I don't own a ONE model.
