[3MX] Good and bad news...
« on: May 01, 2010, 06:09:25 PM »
I saw today the 2.6 kernel development has been actively continued. I think we are not far away from a working kernel with basic functionality. Now this has it's good and bad news.

The good news:

With a decent 2.6 kernel, we can do much more with our LLL. Software can be way more up-to-date, we can take advantage of all new technologies that are available. Debian Lenny can be installed. Theoretically, even popular smartphone operating systems like Android can be installed. The possibilities are endless.

The bad news:

The development of 3MX will probably come to an end. Wicknix already announced he will stop development after the release of 3MX Ultra3. Although I promised I will keep to continue development of 3MX, I think that may not be the best idea. With a 2.6 kernel, 3MX will no longer be supported on the LLL...

That's to bad, perhaps someone else will accept the challenge to make programs for our LLL. I as an absolute beginner with Linux am very happy with the work of Wicknix and would be grateful for a continued support as many people like me. On the other hand, I can keep my LLL as it is, it is already a great improvement compared to the little machine that came out of the box!

ZTE MF628 HSDPA USB Modem (which i can't use with my Trendtac :-( )

Sounds brilliant, I know android is running on 233mhz devices with 64mb ram with no issues so should fly along on an LLL!  :D

Yep,

This new kernel with Lenny runs really nice (from a 1 Gbyte SD card) although no window manager yet. I installed the SSH server Dropbear and it works like charm. This means that (technically) a FTP, Samba, NAS, etc. could be installed.

I also tried to install the light windows manager JWM (also used in the Etch image), but I did succeed in this mission. Maybe the video driver is not working properly or xserver isn't installed, I have no idea yet or maybe this can’t be done yet.

My LLL is a Trendtac 700 EPC which a built-in Wifi dongle so I still have to figure out how to configure this original WiFi dongle since it doesn't work out of the box (maybe it is a driver thing compared to Letux 400 Wifi).

Hopefully this will be a nice summer with a LLL running Debian Lenny and Android via dual boot :)!
I expect that Mater Wicknix will return to stage if this kernel reaches its full potential (hope this is not Wishful thinking).

Many thanks to main development team!

I've got my Elonex OneT+ back from my friend after some time now, so very much looking forward to joining the group again and trying things out!  8)
