Anyone working on a 3MX SMB/SAMBA client?
« on: April 09, 2010, 09:05:17 AM »
Still no progress on samba i'm afraid... Hopefully some other eager beavers will continue messing around with samba to get it working and upload a package.

Calling All Beavers! Is anyone else up for this challenge?

Hi Nigel,
I did install once a samba.xap I found on this site but it didn't work so I then installed the etch files, samba and samba common from etch by extracting from the deb files on top. I also did the same with linneighborhood. They worked to a point and I could transfer files at least between my linux boxes. But it broke the 3mx system so that the messenger app. no longer worked. Also the labels on the dialogues for linneighborhood were iffy if not non existant so all was done by guess work. It showed it did work to a point but I couldn't move any further due to lack of the appropriate knowledge. Fred

Hi Fred,

WHOOSH! Hear that? It was what you said going way over my head ;)

That you had partial success gives me hope though.

Hi,
Just an update on Samba. I checked the files in the samba beta from http://www.xs4all.nl/~jostht/epc/ . It contains files from samba, samba common and smbfs. There is only a few changes to the folders from usr/lib to lib if I remeber correctly. Installing Linneighborhood however, breaks the system namely the messenger client so that you loose all protocols so cant connect to any of the services. Again the text on Lin'hood also becomes mostly unreadable or absent. But you can with fiddling getb to shares on linux at least. What I think is needed is a network browser that doesn't break the system. Fred

I just had a thought. Has anybody tried flashing the debian etch recovery.img and then installing samba? Was just thinking if it worked on that, then its a different issue, but if it doesnt work on etch it may be a bad package from debian all together and would actually need to be rebuilt from source.

Cheers.

Hi Wicknix,
The samba seems ok if I can connect with even a broken linneighborhood.  The samba xap as all the files I think but as soon as linn'hood is added things changed. Just for info installed the etch samba etc files and that broke the system without linn'hood.  I have ultra2 installed and samba xap installed again. But was thinking of trying etch packages for swat, smbc and xsmbrowser. Trouble is re-installing again if it dont work on each file.Fred

Just use the mx3mx script. If you don't get it working, give me a list of all debian packages (including version numbers) and I will pack them into a xap (or 3mx).

Hi,
The files that seem to work are from the etch repos. libsmbclient_3.0.24-6etch10_mipsel.deb, smbc_1.2.2-2_mipsel.deb and smbclient_3.0.24-6etch10_mipsel.deb. When I try to make xap or 3mx on my kubuntu laptop they are made with links for that laptop. There seems to be an order for loading samba beta xap, libsmbclient then smbc. Seems to work without smbclient. You need to set smb.conf before running. It works on first run but then doesn't after that. Seems to be a problem with a hidden file in /.smc called smbcrc. This configures smbc and should be written out from smbc but it seems to mess up. I have confirmed that the hidden folder /.smbc is there and that smbcrc is there as well. I would appreciate this being tried on another machine. I am afraid my knowledge is now at its limits and dont know how to move on now. Fred

***Tried mkxap and it works fine don't know what I was doing wrong so when I have reinstalled I will try them again from the xaps. Fred

****Reinstalled used my xaps and a couple of others. It's clear samba is working because can see shares/other pc. Again the seems to be something that's needed /thats missing to get it to work completely. Could do with some one trying it with a bit more knowledge of the os's ie 3mx and etch. It's so close it's just tantalising.I will try and upload the files I used to my free webspace later. Fred

Hi, I have been doing some more work on samba and smbc. I have made a webpage so you can download my xap. It's called smbc_fred which is a combined file of all that I have installed on top of samba-beta. It's here: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/higgybees/xaps/samba/index.html
Also some pictures of it working:
