Newbie 3MX Questions?
« on: March 23, 2010, 09:37:04 AM »
I'm a Linux Virgin, but even so I love 3MX-Ultra2 on my Elonex ONEtplus, so much better than the default TellyTubby interface.

I've got most things I need working, but I've got a few questions, or perhaps someone can direct me to an Idiot's Guide.

[1] What are the icons on the Taskbar? The Menu, Power and Clock are obvious, but on the left I've also got a [-], a blue rectangle that toggles left to right, and a pair of black blocks on the right (one of them has a red dot at the base).

[2] How do I create a Desktop shortcut to a document? I didn't get the expected options.

[3] Can I share files over a network with a Windows 7 PC?

[4] Are there Power Options available, such as a user defined Sleep timer and a Lid Close function?

TIA

Nigel

I'll take on the file-sharing question.  There is no file-sharing through Samba (a Windows-Linux conduit).

However, if you're willing or already have set up your Windows machine as an FTP Server (designate a Windows directory to be accessed on a browser eg: ftp://192.168.204.204), you can use GFTP to sway files back and forth.

I don't have Windows 7, so don't know how to set it up as an FTP Server, but I'm sure there's a help page somewhere.

Hi Jake, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I need to make it easy for other users of the device to transfer files to the PC. I guess the only way is to use the SD card then :(

[EDIT] Is it possible to install smbclient (or any SMB client) on 3MX?

an SSH server on your 'host' machine, Is a good workaround, it's kind of working backwards from samba i know, but if ones not possible, SSH is something that is.

Is this something that can be left running, without using too many resources?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by making it easy on other users of the LLL.  The heavy lifting would be on your part; once you get a shared directory on Windows, these other users can log on through GFTP without any complication.

I think this topic needs a new thread for the networking issue, where I can give more details of what I am trying to achieve. See here.

Any ideas for my other questions?
