Oddly the machine doesn't like .ogg. They barely play (choppy, if at all) unfortunately and i haven't figured out why or found a work a round.

Streamtuner does have live365 and shoutcast plugins, but they are disabled as they didn't seem to work.  :'(

Fixed the mimetype/run action for .doc. :)

Few more things to do and or test yet. Wont be too much longer though.

Cheers.

Is SAMBA/SMB still in the picture?

Thanks Wicknix,

Too bad about the .ogg and the streamtuner plugins but no big deal. We can always use (online) conversion as a workaround for .ogg. I noticed choppy sound in several video formats as well. So far, .wmv seems to give me the best overall quality.

Great you're making such good progress! I hope it's not too late for one more request: Would it be possible to include a file search utility? I've been spending considerable time trying to find my Firefox bookmarks going through all the folders (doing so, I came across the streamtuner plugins too) but still haven't found them. I thought they'd be in /mozopt/lib/mozilla-firefox/defaults/profile/bookmarks.html but that doesn't seem to be the file Firefox uses to store my bookmarks. (For security and easy backup I've moved all the folders in ~ and a couple of other files like bookmarks to an SD-card and symlinked them back to their original location.)

Thanks for all the hard work!

Thanks Wicknix,

Isn't this what "find" or "grep" are for?

I'd checked the menu for a GUI search utility and couldn't find one. Being a 'terminal virgin' :-[ I never even thought about using terminal. I've googled for some help on using 'find' and just found my bookmarks in ~/.mozilla/firefox/XXXXXX.default/bookmarks.html. Thanks for the tip! I still would like a GUI search utility though..

Dear Wicknix,

Would SABnzbd be a nice add to Ultra3?
I am not sure if it is possible, but I would like to have this simple all-in-one solution to be able to download from newsgroups.

SABnzbd is an Open Source Binary Newsreader written in Python. SABnzbd makes Usenet as simple and streamlined as possible by automating everything we can. All you have to do is add an .nzb. SABnzbd takes over from there, where it will be automatically downloaded, verified, repaired, extracted and filed away with zero human interaction.

http://sabnzbd.org/

So my suggestions would be:
- SABnzdb
- A fast/simply image and slide show viewer

That would make Ultra3 the best LLL OS ever!
But whatever you decide to add into Ultra3, i want to thank you for all the hours you spend in making all the 3MX iamges!!!!

Regards,

Wicknik,

Just before you disappear from here for good, I wanted to add my personal thanks for the work you have done on software development for the LLL.

I am now using Ultra and it suits me really well. It gets used most days and is the box I grab when visiting the relatives to show them the latest pics of the kids etc,

You have helped me understand Linux a great deal better than I did when I bought my cnmBook on a whim from Maplins two years ago.

So thanks again.

Paul

Again, thanks for all the "thank you's" and i'm glad i've managed to save a few people from throwing their budget netbook away. :D

I wont be "leaving" for good. I just wont be releasing any more recovery.img's as i feel Ultra is mostly stable now and does more than what i expected out of these budget netbooks. I'll still compile and/or package up software here and there.

andys64: I don't think those are supported in the default kernel. I'm sure it's possible to get those working by rebuilding the kernel with the needed modules added (or build the modules for it and add them to Ultra). I live in the States and we don't have those here (different service providers and hardware) so i have no way to test any of those 3G usb sticks.

JD1971: Looks neat, but after looking into it a bit more it wouldn't be easy to add. It requires quite of bit of stuff. Maybe i'll look into it as an extra .xap package some time down the road. If PAN isn't cutting it for you, maybe see if there are any decent firefox addon newsreaders.

FL410: I'll check into a lightweight GUI search/find utility. If i find something small that doesn't require a ton of other files to function i'll include it. Otherwise the command line tools built in work just fine. :)

nigelmercier: Still no progress on samba i'm afraid. I will be including an FTP server in the update though. Between ftp + www servers and telnet/ssh built in, that gives you 4 different ways to share or swap files with other machines. That's the best i can do currently. Hopefully some other eager beavers will continue messing around with samba to get it working and upload a package.

burnoq: The ralink driver fix will be included (your zip file) but not installed as it will break the people's wifi who have the zydas chipset (the majority of users). It'll be added to a folder with instructions in the help file.  ;)

Not going to be included, but still on my 'projects' list for future packages include LinPhone (simple voip application), Samba and possibly VideoLan Client.

Cheers.

I don't know whether to be elated by a reply from The Man (why don't we have a We're Not Worthy icon on this forum?), or disappointed.

Out of interest, what is involved in getting an SMB client to work in 3MX? Is anyone else up for this challenge?

Nigel,
I don't think there is any need for any special Worthy or Not Worthy buttons. Lets remember that everything as been voluntary. It's not always possible to respond. Its just a question of time and circumstances I suppose. Samba would be nice but the 3MX as increased the usability of these little laptops beyond expectations. It's never going to do everything that everyone wants and just as to be a compromise. Lets also remember this as all been achieved without the use of the resources of staff that can be thrown at problems by multi-national corporations.
It must be held up as a model to the wider Linux community as to what can be achieved in a short time span by  users.

Indeed, that's what makes this even more special. I wasn't criticising in any way, just somewhat in awe.

Nigel,

You just have to get your mind around making your Windows machine into an FTP server :)

Heck, *I* did it--how hard can it be if a klutz like me can put it together.  I even turned my *phone* into an FTP server.

Once you get a shared directory on your Window 7, gftp client takes care of everything else.  It's a pretty solid arrangement, which is not something you can always say about the LLL machine, given its temperamental hardware.

Secondly, since samba has been difficult to compile on this OS, how comfortable would you be in trusting the end result, even if it did end up "working"?  It could blow up your files upon a transfer.

I FTP all files between XP and Linux, even though samba works fine on my puppy linux eee 900.

My two cents,
Jake

Hi Jake,

I'm getting a bit concerned about taking over this thread - sorry guys!

I've got an FTP server running on the Windows PC, and also on my new router. Only problem is that I need to make sharing the file fairly transparent - asking the other users to run an FTP session is out of the question. If I could run a script to FTP the file automagically it might be OK, but that is beyond me in Linux.

Nigel,

If I understand you correctly, you've set up already an ftp server on your Windows 7 machine, meaning that you have a public directory of your files, accessible by typing in 192.***.***.***

If that's true, then you've done the heavy lifting.  As long as you're willing to have no userid/password and completely open FTP directory (upload and download privileges), then all your users need to do on LLL is open GFTP Client and type in said address, hitting Enter twice at the userid and password prompts and like a wedding night, everybody's in and happy.

Or am I missing something,
Jake
