some newbie questions

hi,

I just got a  k7e1, small puter build by VD TECH.
(specifications looks the same as CnM Minibook (ram 128meg, 2giga nand "hdd", xburst400 32bits)
Kernel is v70 according to the message shown at boot time.

I have changed the OS for 3mx-ultra, all have worked fine (i have lost the original OS )
a minor problem is all texts are in english and i m french, i have changed the keyboard mapping.

I have a couple of questions:

I suppose there is no simple way to plug a sagem 800 adsl usb modem and got it to run?


How to add password to access to the puter?
(the puter boots and you are never required to enter login/password, how to change that?)

Any tool to encrypt files, partitions, usb stick and mount them?


I have explored the forum and  i wasn't able to find answers.

And Is WPA supported?

I can't answer all your questions as I am a newbie myself. With me WPA and WEP didn't work. Now have changed my network settings to "no security" and added limited access to registered MAC addresses (which I already had). So I have put the Mac address of the little laptop in the router and have forbidden all other Mac's (except those in my homenetwork) to make a connection. I also made my SSID "hidden".  It is perhaps not perfect, but it works.

I have tried the command passwd, password changed but it doesnt prevent the linux box to start and nothing is changed.

I have set a password to the root account as well. I dont see any change at all.
Puter starts as usually, no password asked

I have found a precompiled version of gpe-login and modified start file to make it run.
It didnt help Nothing changed

Actually, i was wrong, it is working but now i cannot access to my linux box
i think i know why.

I was thinking this is cause i didnt mapped correctly the keyboard and default setting is used.
I cannot access anymore, probably i need to reinstall all the stuff.

Is gpe-login need configuration to work?

all seems ok.
I have put the /usr/bin/gpe-login command after the call of keyboard mapping in the start file. Its working fine.

Cool. The reason 3MX didnt do login screen by default is that i had done that on a previous release and nobody liked it. So it went back to booting straight into the desktop.

WPA is also supported on simpler networks. I use WPA/PSK just fine. If you hide this and bind that and have some wacked out network it more than likely wont work.

Such small puters are intended to be used out your home and so, it is increasing the bad luck to get it lost or stolen. None want his own data to be stolen and viewed by someone else.

Anyway, its not very secure.
Someone can update the OS, i suppose, to prevent it to boot and show the password window.

the password program works on my Cnm notebook so hopefully will do so on your VD TECH machine.
