Power socket pinout

First post so please excuse if it's in the wrong place.

I have done a search for this but nothing comes up on the forum or the web.

I have a broken WinCE mini Netbook as well as a Linux version, however the linux version does not have a battery, so I tried the WinCE version battery in the linux netbook and nothing happens.

Do the batteries on the linux verions have two or three cables?
Also can anyone with a multimeter check their power socket to see if it matches mine please. Mine is showing as a shared middle pin with a 4v difference between the middle and either outer pin.
The windows one has two cables on the battey on the outer connectors, and the power socket on the MB shows an 8V difference between them.

So - is my linux netbook borked or do I need a linux version of the battery?

The linux version workes fine on the mains, but i would like to get it working form the battery.

My laptop has a three pin connector, but the battery has only two wires. The outer two pins are used.
