This release is really good and I will now be using this all the time. Welldone Wicknik

Couple of questions

I still get the unresponsive script mainly on the bbc.co.uk website with both Weasel and Skipstone. anyone know the reason?

Can I still use the mkxap script to install .deb packages ?

On the default OS I used to copy the .deb files to the Extend partition and used the archiver program to unpack the deb and data file. I then ran the MKXAP script to make the .xap files.

thanks

paul

Thanks. The script error seems to happen randomly. I think it's just because these machines arent quite fast enough and the java scripting in the browser times out. Annoying yes, but i guess thats the price we pay for desktop browsers on low powered netbooks.

As for making xap's, sure nothing different there except one thing. All Ultra's libs are in /lib and /usr/lib is symlinked to /lib. After extracting your files you'll have libs in /usr/lib. Move those to /lib (make lib if you dont have it) then delete /usr/lib. Now you're safe to use mkxap and use the package. Failure to do so will break my symlink and will break some applications.

Cheers.

Hi Wicknik,

gcc working fine. My fault. problem was nothing to do with the librarys but a typo on my test file!

On my Ultra /usr/lib is a symbolic link to /lib already, which exists, so presumably xinstall will put them in /lib automatically?

Haven't looked yet, but is it easy to add appl icons to the desktop?

Great product

Updated Ultra and you can grab it from the same website. If you already have the old ultra set the way you like this isn't really needed. New users should use this version however, or anyone wanting to be on the 'bleeding edge'.

New in this update:
pidgin 2.6.5 (most recent version) with facebook chat plugin included
gaiksaurus (thesaurus)
abiword-plugins (makes abiword more feature rich)
lynx text browser (requirement for abiword plugins)
weechat irc (console irc client that replaces bitchx)
unrtf (converts .rtf files to html)
dosbox (DOS emulator)
scite (nifty editor)

Also fixed a few taskbar icons. Firefox and a few other apps no longer show as a red X. Changed firefox's theme to littlefox to give more screen space. Changed default browser to skipstone (starts faster than firefox) and some other minor changes.

Cheers.

Yep just install IPRadio as before and do the hack to add stations mentioned in a thread here. I didn't add it as i didn't like the idea of 'pay' software in 3MX, and streamtuner is basically the same with more features.

As for recycle bin i'm afraid not. Usually on desktops nautilus or kde/konqueror etc handle that and they are too heavy for these machines. However if you use rox-file (3MX file manager+icon handler) it asks you if you want to delete the file after you click 'delete'. I find that pretty fool proof. Same with MC. Just be careful. :D

Cheers.

Thanks for the quick reply Wicknix, I am using it now and almost everything seems ok. Cant seem to load my usb sticks wich did work before. Is the an update I can apply such as the one on the CnM site. Thanks, Fred

ps Forgot the basics of linux. I hadn't rebooted. All ok now.
Quite pleased with this LLL. It was given me in bits, someone had tried to repair brocken power socket and got fed up. All I need now is to find out how to add it to my network. thanks again Wicknix. Fred

USB memory or 3G sticks? I didn't change anything other than adding software and icons really. I don't own any 3G sticks to test, but usb memory sticks are working fine on mine. Try a reboot and let me know if that helps. First boot is a little wonky as fonts get cached and firefox initializes etc etc. Everything should be peachy after that.

Cheers.

Another great release.  A couple of little things, if you're interested, but nothing major:

1) Contacts doesn't start.  But if a user reinstalls xcontacts from your site, all is fine

2) Since there's no way to disable abiword's grammar check (and disabling grammar plugin only works until the next time abiword restarts), users should know that they have to remove grammar libs to effectively stop the grammar check, which can be pretty cpu intensive with a large document

3) Keyboard map is UK in this release--no problem, but in my EPC 700, the double-quote makes a @ and vice-versa.  Changing the keyboard in start.sh to US alleviates this problem

4) In this release, Skipstone downloads all files to / and I can't seem to change that directory (I would like to choose ~/downloads)  Any workarounds?

5) Oh, to get Skipstone to log in to forums, etc. properly, users have to DISABLE "remember passwords" in Preferences

But this is really nice update.  I find myself using this OS/Computer almost exclusively since it's so very cool.

Thanks,
Jake

I thanks for info re xcontacts. Also tried a 3g Dongle. Needed to download the drivers from the CnM site http://194.150.201.35/cnmlifestyle/downloads/3g.htm . Downloaded all files on this page. But modem only detected after booting with it already connected. But I think thats how it used to be with the default OS. Just gets better every day I use it. Any one cracked samba yet ?. Fred

jakfish:
1) Good catch. I never use it. Never noticed it.
2) Yeah i removed the libs for the non working plugins, never tried grammar check on a large file however.
3) Yep, i forgot to mention i picked up a cnmbook which has uk keyboard (help in menu explains changing keymaps)
4) You could change the downloader used in prefs to skipdownload for the GUI downloader. Should fix that.
5) Another good catch. :)

higgybees: Samba is on my to-do list. Got a few requests for it, but so far i haven't had any luck with it.

Cheers.

Yup, changing to skipdownload solves the problem.  And your help file is what I had followed to change the keyboard.

higgybees: my Samba workaround is to set up my XP laptop as ftp server; that'll give you a shared directory (ies) to swap files with gftp client.  There's even a file uploader extension for firefox so you can do it all via bon echo.  Wish there were the same for skipstone...

These are the instructions I used, and I found it pretty painless:
