No Browser Content Advisor ??????
« on: September 15, 2008, 07:41:12 PM »
Hi...
I have just received my Elonex one T+ for my daughter who is 8yrs old and we are very pleased out of the box....But after playing with it am extremley concerned that there is NO content advisor or blocker for sites on the internet, basically my daughter can inadvertantly and inappropriately be directed to SEX sites or other content not for her eyes. This concerns me as this notebook is marketed for children.
I have raised this with Elonex support and am awaiting a call for an update on what can be done....?

Regards
Millsy  ???

Have a look at setting up Parental Controls via OpenDNS.

I think you can do this for your whole network, or just on a PC by PC basis.

EDIT: I just set this up on my Missus's ONET+.

To set this up on the ONET+, do the following:

1) Goto the Settings Tab.
2) Click Network Setup.
3) Enter 208.67.222.222 as the Primary DNS Server.
4) Enter 208.67.220.220 as the Secondary DNS Server.
5) Click OK and close the network settings program.
6) Click on the Internet Tab.
7) Start the WiFi configuration Program.
8 ) Click the WLAN Setting button.
9) Untick the Auto DNS box.
10) Click OK.

I would shutdown and restart the Computer and that these settings a re set correctly, but typing in some gobbledigook in the Web Browser frontend and the opendns page should appear.

You should then be able to register and configure your OpenDNS account. You will not be able to compile and run their Dynamic DNS program, but you might be able to run it on another PC, in the house.

Many thanks i shall try this......

Just to update you, Elonex support reply was to ask my ISP (BT Broadband) to block content from there end......????
Surely this would mean the whole family would get blocked from most content like forums, national lottery and so on ...?

I haven't used OPENDNS myself but I don't see anything wrong with it - you just need to override the dns settings dished out by your router to get it to work.

I have since found out that Foxfilter and Glubble are parental controls add-ons for firefox.  I think that glubble is more likely to be what i'm looking for.

It's well known that all the mozilla based products don't have a content advisor built-in and that it uses add-ons or proxies for that purpose.  Elonex should know better.

I tried gubble for my boys; but it limits childrens' exploration a little.  Foxfilter - and a little chat about what could be lurking in the darker corners of the internet - seemed to set them straight.
