No. There are 7 versions of 3MX. All slightly different.

1) rc1 - first initial release (considered buggy)
2) rc1.1 - second revision of rc1 (considered mostly stable and usable)
3) rc2 - first release of the rc2 series (major buggy)
4) rc2.1 second revision of rc2 (still majorly buggy)
5) rc3 - first relase of the rc3 series (fairly stable)
6) rc3.1 second revision and final release (considered mostly stable and usable)
7) retro - first and only release of an 'enhanced' default OS (considered mostly stable and usable)

So in short, most people who use 3MX prefer rc1.1 or rc3.1 or retro. The rest were more or less bug testing releases. BonEcho only works in defaultOS, rc1.1 and retro because it's too old (2007 build) and crashes before it even starts up on anything else.

You are posting in the 'Retro' thread by the way..... go to page #1 for details, screen capture and download link.

Cheers.

I think Seagull meant:

If you don't like the Default or 3MX, Retro is the best one for you (Y)

BTW, Bon Echo/Firefox does take a long time to boot up on first booting as it's sorting files out for itself....

If you want my vote, it's either the default OS, 3MX v.1.1 (quite swift), or Retro :)

Unh.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I am currently using Retro, which I am very happy with. It is so much better than the original OS!
Its a shame that I have to miss out on newer software because of this. Although it isn't much of a problem now, but when it becomes one I shall switch to 3MX.

Thank you Wicknix

Yes, my punctuation let me down there.

I did mean to say if you don't like Deafault or 3MX, then retro is the one for you.

Actually though, 3MX 1.1 might suit you (if you havn't tried it) its quite fast for what it has to work with hardware wise, and has your beloved Bon Echo ;)
"Wow baby i was booorn! With a fast fuuuuse!"
"I wanna go fast!"
"Tango With Added Tango... You've been Tango'd!"

This has been my first experiance with linux, the LLL. Now i have installed it on the laptop that came with M$.!

Plutonia could you please post an idiots guide to what you did to get your dongle working please/

Strange thing to do quote myself but can anyone help, I seem to have got lost

wicknix posted following:
'Somebody had emailed me with the e220 fix. It seems the device entry for /dev/ttyUSB0 has the wrong major/minor. In Retro it shows as 180,0 when in fact it's supposed to be 188,0. So to fix. Delete /dev/ttyUSB0 and create a new device entry (with mknod) with the major/minor of 188,0. According to him his e220 now works on Retro.'

I take it that mknod is Midnightcommander , how do I find the /dev/ttyUSB0 entry? I have no experience of this at all any help welcome!

Just open xterm and type these commands.

 su
 rm /dev/ttyUSB0
 mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0

Now reboot and you should be all set.

Cheers.

I like this image :)

The only things that would make it really perfect are:

a) Possibility to use VLC. I made a XAP-file of VLC and all of its dependencies in Debian Mipsel, but it starts up with a very weird theme, and I haven't seen a possibility to play something with it.

b) When you hover your mouse over an icon, the grey area (indicating youre mouse is there) doesn't fit the icon, it's located below the icon. I'll post a screenshot, cause my English isn't very well...

c) Every applications starts, and works, but after I quit it, matchbox says: "The application you want to start, encountered an error".

But I like it anyway :)

retro image and k3565/e220 mobile broadband
« Reply #52 on: August 09, 2009, 09:20:31 PM »
hi,

getting the k3565/e220 internet dongle working required following:

1. install e220 drivers from cnm site
2.  install driver modem v70 file from cnm site;it seems o require this even if v70 firmware software is installed
3. using 'mc' prog included in retro image, find 'dev/ttyUSBO 180.0' and remove it
or alternatively command in terminal is:
 su
 rm /dev/ttyUSB0

n.b. it seems to be there twice and therefore removing it in 'terminal' leaves one of the entries and the dongle won't work until you use 'mc' and remove second instance.
4. replace dev/ttyUSBO with 188.0 (i.e. mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0)
5. reboot and then it should work;might not work straight away but remove dongle and try again and it will recognise dongle and work fine from then on

no problems since;much better look and software than original o/s. sweet!

3MX Retro retro.I will tag a question or two to this thread.
Note. Not necessary to operate the system , but fun to have.
Q1. Love the Start Up sound. As in I would like one other than whitch is supplied.
Were do I place my wav.? I suspect the answer is.
A1. Place into the system at conception. (compiled in the kernel)
Q2. A shutdown sound. How to? I suspect the answer is.
A2. Write a script into the system at conception.
Q3. A boot screen to compliment the close down screen of Tux walking towards the screen?
I am fairly surer the answer is.
A3. Place into system at conception.
Q4. Has anyone had success in connecting a eternal usb wi-fi plug to Retro?
The inboard , on board  wi-fi plug will not reach to the places other laptops can.
I  have two usb wi-fi plugs whitch are quite happy to play with a Linux pc.
I suspect the answers are.
A4a. Write a script into the system. I hope not !!!
A4b. Write a Mipsel driver for your plug.
A4c. Plan B. A lan connection from the front of the house to the back using power over lan to supply a slave wi-fi box, to conect my cnmBook to the garden shed.
Statement. Screen Snap. Screenshot. ap-Screenshot.
Others / Software Installer will take you to Add-Remove tick the box show Patch
find ap-Screenshot press box infomation.
Ctrl+Alt+P will give you a screenshot place in a file as you will.
This information is in the website . I found the thead after finding it in the system. It would help people searching the website if multible listings are given as in the top of this line. You need to know the correct question to ask to get a answer from the search function. Multable listings may help this.
I have had my Maplins cnmBook since January this year, and love the idea of a system on a chip, am I lucky that mine is happy to take a SD card upgrade?
Wicknix has opened the box. Can we have some None Geek, or at-least Low level Geek Speek of How to make minor changes at the conception level.

I can answer a few of those.

Startup sound: You can place your .wav anywhere, but by default i kept them in /share/sound. Then just edit /etc/init.d/start and you'll see the line "play /share/sound/login.wav". Change login.wav to your desired .wav file.

Shutdown sound: I haven't figured out yet. The system shuts down too fast for me to figure out how to implement it.

Boot screen: That has to be compiled into the kernel. Easy to do if you have a cross compiler set up.

USB wifi sticks: The prebuilt kernel only has support for these particular machines hardware and supported extras. The original alpha400/trendtac didn't have built in wifi and you had to purchase the 'supported' wifi stick as an extra add-on. Some googling may bring up the supported brand. Otherwise, yes, rebuilding the kernel with the proper driver is needed.

SD card upgrade: No, thats pretty much all that works for upgrades is SD. The lucky ones are people who can actually use both SD and USB sticks for upgrades.

Cheers.

Wicknix, do you know how to make the grey box around an icon when you hover over it smaller?
Now it covers an area of the screen without any text on it, and that's pretty useless.

To make it smaller you have to enlarge the icons. It's a lose-lose situation. :(
I forget where the config file is though.. in /etc somewhere. Been ages since i messed with defaultOS/retro.
