Retro recovery.img released
« on: June 09, 2009, 03:43:27 PM »
Ok, here it is. Basically just the default OS with some enhancements and impovements.

Borrowed and slightly modified the 'visita' theme by Traf.
Added or made a few new icons.
Installed what i thought was useful software.
Added a better audio player (and ability to play more types of sound files).
Apps with ability to play sounds now can and will (pidgin/xchat etc).

Everything should work the same (package installer etc)
If i installed something you don't want just remove it.

I just got bored one night and whipped this together.
It's more my take on what the default OS 'should have been'.

NOTE: The icon for the mario deluxe gameboy game will lock the desktop up
after you quit the game!
I'd suggest running all gameboy games from the terminal and remove the icon.

I have been waiting for this for aaaaages! :D im glad its finally here! If there are bugs, will you be doing a Remix 2 to simply address these? Or will we have to sort/live with them?

There should be no new bugs (besides the quirks the default OS had in the first place) other than launching gameboy games from a desktop icon which i mentioned above. There will be no version 2. This was just a 1 time deal made out of complete boredom.  ;)

Cheers.

Possibly. I don't own that website. My web host closed up shop last month and everything was graciously mirrored there so that stuff wasn't lost.

Yes, thanks Wick for this, a good un!

You say that if there's anything I don't want on it can be uninstalled? Not tried it but presume uninstall using the package manager? I have a question about this though ;)

Am I correct in thinking that unlike Windows, when you uninstall a package in Linux it just saves space? i.e. it doesn't save processing power.... whereas in Windows some apps. use processing power even when not being used e.g. to quick run an app.

But I find Retro pretty nifty anyway!

Unh.

For the most part you are correct. On large desktop distros there are a few background process running like cron, your print spooler and other system services. The default OS however really only has the very minimal background processes running, just enough to make the system functional.

In this particular case uninstalling applications (with package manager, yes) will just free up some space and nothing else.

Cheers.

It depends on which package you are trying to install. Most of the 3MX specific packages will not work on the default OS (or Retro). I suppose you could tell me which packages you are thinking about installing and i could reply yes or no.

Cheers.
