I can't see it being a problem trying to get a 'bare-bones' installation of Debian onto the LLL via apt. I've not really given it a thought but I think the way to go about it is to find out what packages would be required. When you have got them, insert them into dpkg database (/var/lib/pkg/status and available). When you run apt-get update & apt-get -f install, apt should download them. The only problem I can see is that it would be a bit messy having the original os on it as well.

An alternative, and better way IMHO,  for what you want to do is to try and do a Debian install via the internet. The biggest problem is trying to create a boot image. I've never done that before so not sure what would entail. I found a link giving some info about this:

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/mipsel/

Good luck and keep us posted on your adventure if you decide to attempt it!!!

Sorry IMHO, is an internet acronym for in my humble opinion. It's like LOL which means Laughing out loud.

Here is a Wiki entry for ancronyms:

If all you want is a base etch i have a recovery file already made up, just never uploaded it. I added the kernel modules and some repositories, packed it up and installed it a few months back. Boots fine. Only issue goes back to the kernels frame buffer which driver doesn't seem to refresh the console so you have to type 'clear' alot to see whats happening on the screen. The display is fine once you startx however. Other issues include having to manually connect to the internet, manually mount your usb and sd cards etc which is nothing for a seasoned linux user however. If i can find what cd/dvd i burned the etch-recovery file to i'll upload it one of these days. I meant to upload it with 3MX, just kept forgetting about it. It was surprisingly easy to make the debootstrap image. I'm actually shocked nobody else has made and uploaded a copy already.

Cheers.

That would be great wicknix!! Thanks again, for all the work you've put in to creating 3MX and providing help to the rest of us.

I would also be interested in a base etch so I can muck about more with the LLL. Thinking about it, it has been a funny that I've learned more about Linux on the LLL in the last month or two than I have from using it for the last couple of years on my home computer!!

Can I add my vote for that please?  I've never used Debian before - but it would be fun to see what can really be done with it on these machines.  (Slrn, Leafnode, fetchmail, Opera, Gimp ...?)

Another vote here! As has been said, it sounds fun and a good base to start off from.
