3MX-rc3-final released
« on: March 27, 2009, 04:35:32 AM »
Ok, here goes. This will be the last 3MX release ever (by me anyway). It's good enough for what i use it for. I'll still uploaded new applications here and there for it however.

Additions & fixes:
Iceweasel replaced firefox 3 (faster).
CenterIM replaced pidgin (lighter).
Xine-ui for audio and video playback and supports some filetypes that VLC didn't.
Cplay audio player added and configured to play pretty much any audio format like mp3, xm, sid, s3m (except midi).
Added pop up dialogs for help files and message boxes, like when its safe to remove SD card.(scroll with arrow keys)
Added missing /etc/shadow file so you can add/change passwords now.
WPA is now working, as is WEP and of course unsecured wireless.
New CPU, MEM and Network meters along with new side bar layout.
Somewhat generic PDF viewer replacement, but it works nicely.
Fixed the colors of IP Radios registration popups so that you can actually read them.
Added MilkyTracker.
Added XPaint to replace broken rgbpaint.
Added nmapfe (gtk front end to nmap port scanner)
TkDesk file manager now starts in /root (where it shouldve in the first place)
and i'm sure a bit more that i cant remember at the moment.

Note: In order to have the network applet display anything you will need to edit /etc/jwm/jwmrc line 167 and change it from ppp0 (tether to cellphone) to either: eth0 (ethernet) or eth1 (wireless).

Boot up is the same, first boot can take a minute or 2. Same with Iceweasel. After a reboot the speed is back to normal. Bug reports are still a good idea. Even if i don't fix them (i don't plan to) somebody else might be able to.

Cheers.

I'm loving 3mx, just install the Fluxbox package.
I'm finding that I'm learning more about *nix using my LLL than using my Buntu Desktop.
I've always been a fan of Gnome, but I'm swaying to switch my desktop to JWM and Flux, they appear alot more configurable.

Ok, just out of curiosity... I know i said rc3 would be my last release, however my personal install has turned out just a bit better. I now have streamtuner working which replaces the crappy non free ipradio and allows you to browse streams right from the application itself, add streams manually, bookmark streams and even play or rip streams. Also patched up 'nap' a console napster/opennap p2p client with a working servers list. Works wonderfully. Added mozplugger to iceweasel so many types of audio and document formats linked into webpages automatically now open the proper program to play/view them. Installed a bunch of development environments including ruby, python, tcl/tk, perl, gcc/cpp and managed to find a 2 paned GUI file manager that works well (looks similar to MC but its a graphical application, not terminal based) and configured to auto launch proper programs. Example, clicking on an image file auto opens gpicview, clicking on an mp3 auto launches an mp3 player, etc etc. There are a few other changes also, like including a 64 meg swapfile that gets automounted at boot among others.

Now, my question is... would anybody be interested in it?(dumb question right?) It'd be rather large, might be close to a 220 meg download. Call it an unofficial rc3.1 if you will. I'll upload it in the near future for those of you that want 'balls to the walls' crammed into your LLL. I guess i'm just too picky to have rc3 to be the last release.  ::)

Cheers.

Hey wicknix, all us 3mx user's wouldn't say No, even to a 220 meg download.
?? where did you place your swapfile? on ssd or SD?
I use a swap started with a 256 on SD, but dropped it to 128 on SD, tho it only ever used around 25meg.

It? It meaning what? I mentioned a bunch of things. Of them, only the napster client and development tools (ruby, python, perl and gcc/cpp) would work on default OS.

Cheers.

I'd go for that.

Out of interest, what problems are there with workgroups ie. how can we go about getting them working?

No idea really. I'd guess samba and lin neighborhood and their deps would be all thats required. I have no use for workgroups, so never looked into it.

Cheers.
