Can't Get 3MX to Install...should i buy a new SD card?
« on: March 26, 2009, 10:30:59 PM »
I know its not exactly big money but i'd like to know if people think thats the problem.
So far, i've tried two SD Cards. One has been a 4gb one which took ages to format to FAT (im not sure if it actually did, as i didnt think you could with 4gb Cards). The other was a 256mb MiniSD which uses an SD card adaptor. As far as im aware this did convert to FAT.

Now, along with this ive tried a usb key. In all situations the 'recovery file could not be found'. I've tried two MX distros, as well as CnM's official one (although i only tried that on USB key and 4gb, since it was two big for 256).

What im saying is, would it be logical to try another SD card? I cant see where i have gone wrong.
Im using a CnMBook by the way, i only got it today.

I think MiniSD doesn't equal SD nor SDHC.

in that it wouldnt work? i mean when i plug the mini sd into the sd adaptor and plug it in, i can take the music etc from it through file manager and put them onto the solid state.

On boot up it simply says V70 in the top left corner and thats it.

Can the LLL read / see the contents of the SD using the current OS?

If not  ??? Try formatting the SD Card in another device like a camera!!

Then try again!!

I have tried formatting it in a Camera - although im not sure if its simply deleting the contents and not actually formatting. And yes the LLL does read, see and access the contents of the SD card on the current OS.

I dont mean to be a hassle guys, but i am desperate to get this 3MX installed.
If anyone could give me a step by step guide from the beginning as to how to do this, what i should expect to see etc, i'd be entirely grateful and im sure i could fling a few quid from paypal towards someone who puts the effort into making this work. Generally, i dont see what im doing wrong but maybe its something silly im missing out - in these cases it normally is!

Me Too! I have been struggling to install release 3 of 3MX... Release 2 worked off the SD card, but I can't transfer the files for R3 (unzipped on my pc) to it - it hung under my existing 3MX OS whilst transferring on my Elonex OneT (I don't have a memory card reader on my PC). I have tried booting off a USB memory stick but I got the message Recovery File is bad and now. Help!

I wonder is it because the memory card or memory stick has to be blank except for the 3MX files - my camera leaves a couple of files on the card after formatting, perhaps these got in the way? Likewise the memory stick has SanDisk files on it.

Sounds like it might be worth investing in a card reader for the PC. A USB-SD reader costs hardly anything (most supermarkets sell them for under 10 UKP) and will save you a lot of heartache.
Elonex ONEt: user since Xmas 2008.
OS Version: ELX-V07 + extras
Ubuntu: user since May 2008.
Windows:  user/programmer since the dawn of time. :)
Linux Level: working towards 'Intermediate'.

Hmph, I downloaded the 3MX Rc3 Final Release and it downloaded fine, unpackaged fine, copied it over from USB onto the SD and pressed F3 at boot up like normal and it says, Recovery Image Bad.

But when I them removed the RC3 image and went back to using the Rc2.1 image it loaded fine.

I normally transfer the image across using the built in file manager on-board the miniBook, but now I am going to use the PC and try again just to see if it was TkDesk that screwed it up... Also I'll make a better note of the error message if it crops up again, something about can not mount device...
