3MX-rc1.1 now available
« on: March 01, 2009, 06:06:37 AM »
So here's the deal. Both rc1 and rc2 were released into the wild with some positives and some negatives. I listened to all feedback and bug reports and fixed/changed alot because of them. So this rc1.1 release is built upon rc1 because rc2 is heading off in a whole different direction. What you'll find in rc1.1 is a bunch of fixes, some additions and a new look. If the original rc1 and/or rc2 work fine for you by all means suit yourself and stay with those, but rc1.1 is recommended and will be the version i release updates/patches/packages for while i work on moving forward with rc2.1 and above.

Improvements:
Now has a nifty 'startup' sound at bootup.
Keyboard bug is 99% fixed. (thanks Deuzer)
Added the ext2 and ntfs modules from Mijzelf (thanks) and set them to autoload.
New look to the user interface which seems a little faster and is more usable.
Custom 'warf bar' which has a few app launchers and some informative applets.
Applets for wireless strength, mem/cpu monitors (click to switch between them), volume, and clock w/date.
The wireless applet shows 'no card' when wifi module is not activated.
The launcher icons only require 1 click rather than 2 clicks.
4 virtual desktops on the taskbar which now autohides.
Most applications are set to auto maximize now by default.
Clock now displays in 12 hour format.
File manager no longer crashes when clicking on 'properties'
X-Chat auto joins #littlelinuxlaptop on irc.freenode.net
Pidgin (messenger) has sounds enabled.
Added Transmission bittorrent client.
Built in HELP was updated. Please read it. Its there for a reason.
Created a menu shortcut in 'settings' to enable the 3g driver. Just click it a few times. (davemoore please test it)
Added shortcut keys to change brightness with 3 different settings. ctrl+alt+1 - 3. 3 being the brightest.
Replaced the console mp3 player for something a bit more simple, but works flawlessly.
Added a gnuboy.rc file in /root/.gnuboy which enables scale x2 and drops samplerate to increase speed.
Added a nice wireless information application which displays loads of info.
Also a few other goodies i'm sure somebody will notice. :)

Known bugs:
Online update has been disabled to avoid software conflicts/downgrades. (not really a bug)
The bitorrent client crashes when clicking on 'preferences' , but otherwise works fine.
Once wifi is enabled there is no easy way to disable it without a reboot. (not a bug, just lacking a feature)

This will be the last release of the rc1 series and it is considered to be stable.

I'm also wondering when it'll appear. As rc1 worked very well out of the box which is more than can be said of xenium.
I'm going to try downloading later.

Yeah, I am doubting the usefulness of that site more and more... it hasnt been updated SINCE xenium...

Maybe some of us should make our own site... ::)

Actually, I had a quick look and it seems to now include rc2.

It's quite odd that they skip the first one and move directly to the second, which more people have had issues with.

Matt,

Thank you yet again.

RC1.1 loaded and working excellently.......even my WiFi locks on from boot, great  ;D It's good to see the Wireless link applet suddenly leap into life showing that the link is up. Previously I would enter xTerm and "ifconfig"

Tweaked the jwmrc file with a sub-menu to add loads of GameBoy Colour games for the Grandchildren.

With ref. to the RC2 page on LLL site. The text, seems to be very much a "cut & paste" job from the Xenium page!

Now all I need to do is get this keyboard a visa so that it knows it's in the UK  ;)

oldbloke, you can edit /etc/init.d/start and change the keyboard map from xmodmap.us-int to xmodmap.uk. Save and reboot. That should do it. If not, in xterm type: xmodmap /share/xmodmap/xmodmap.uk and it'll load on demand.  ;D

monoreille, seems the wireless-info program found in 'utilities' folder is the reason for the keyboard losing fn/shift. Seems certain software is knocking the keyboard out. Just dont launch that app and it'll be fine. I had removed gkrellm because that was the problem in rc1 and rc2. Now another program does it.  :-\

Nice to see lll.com updated. I actually asked Menno that rc2 be linked (before it was bug tested by all the users), but thats fine as this forum is linked, and anybody who can read will notice the rc1 and rc1.1 releases also.   ;)

Cheers.

I doubt too.It encourage people to send software those are not up yet,but when I did, they didn't put it up.Also,I sent an email highlighting some mistakes on its FAQ page (Firefox addons can't be applied by their opinion) ,yet the wrong info is still there..And it has been like that for such a long time..

Matt,
Thank you.
The keyboard has it's passport in order now.
It must be good to know what you are doing with these little gems..........ah well, maybe one day  ::)

I have a couple of issues, but they probably belong in the "Bugs" thread; I know nothing of IRC so the bugs thread is what I shall use. Unless, of course someone would care to produce a How-To for IRC   ;)

Thank you oh so much.  When I first got this mini laptop I was so stunned by the fact that there was no other software for it.  Now that there are actual useful programs for this minibook it is so much more useful.  Thanks again!  Good Work!!!

I miss the start menu.  And would love some info on editing the right click menu.

Martin, since you are using MX 1.1 you can connect easily,

1. Connect to the internet on the wifi manager
2. When connected open xchat
3. Click the xchat drop down menu
4. Change your name and the alternative names
5. Press Connect.
6. Wait till you see a list of names and the topic in purple text and off you go.

Hope that this helps :D
