Wifi problem [Solved]
« on: February 15, 2009, 03:25:17 PM »
Hi,

I can connect to my router easily with security settings off but I would rather use wpa-psk/wpa2-psk only entering password just does not want to connect...

Only thing I can see in a terminal is channel 1 and my router is set at 11 not sure if that makes any difference

Is it my laptop or have I missed some setting?

MrG,

You don't say which LLL you have.
I have a OneT+ and I have never been able to connect to my AP (Linksys WAP54G) with anything other than WEP encryption, which I won't use because of the lack of security.

I use my ONEt with WEP. It's good enough to keep out casual crackers, and I use MAC filtering on all my wireless devices to increase the security a few notches (i.e. the wireless router will only talk to devices with a recognised MAC address).
Elonex ONEt: user since Xmas 2008.
OS Version: ELX-V07 + extras
Ubuntu: user since May 2008.
Windows:  user/programmer since the dawn of time. :)
Linux Level: working towards 'Intermediate'.

Is there any way of getting a software version number from system?

Read there is an update to system required but only one patch loaded when I updated

I run with WPA2 OK but did have problems initially. I found that using the E on ch.11 was very iffy, so I changed to ch.10 and had no further problems. Now, especially with Leven's Firefox go-faster mod, things breeze along....

Re. an update to the system, on your boot up screen does it show v.70? That's the latest version... It's not actually the absolute correct numbering of the kernel, it's their way of us knowing which version we have. I think the kernel version in real terms is actually something like v.2.6.7, which will be in a file.... somewhere... :)

Yes, just change to ch.10 on your router. Just for comparison's sake my router is a Zoom X6. One other thing is to make sure there isn't a cordless phone base station near your router or E, as they use similar frequencies.

The go-faster mod (you get free stripes too :) ) is in the How To's section, under Faster Web Sites. I even did the mod to my PC Firefox too and it's much much faster now!

the best thing to do is install Wifi stumbler, and sniff around to see what channels are being used in the neighbourhood to avoid interference. If you see, that most of the people use 1 ,set up yours for 3.
I have done it long time ago.The lower numbers are recommended, however to fix this issue, the patch to fix this has been released a while ago.

Yes, the patch I think Lev is talking about adds channels 12 and 13 to the E - they don't have them in China so weren't available until the patch came out and I think that's why 11 was so iffy.
