Hi
My first post here and many thanks for the effort that has transformed this little laptop

How about pilot-link tools so that palm devices could be synced with the device? also needed is a personal organiser program that would work with palm devices eg Evolution ?

A faster web browser is badly needed, perhaps Opera or Seamonkey

And has been mentioned a much better media player what about TCPMP that I believe to work on many platforms including palm organisers!

Unix utilities requested
« Reply #16 on: August 25, 2009, 07:39:40 AM »
Hello,

The LLL is potentially a very good utility box in a network, and there are a few things in particular that I would like to run on it. I'm not particularly worried about speed, but the fact that it effectively has its own UPS and is entirely quiet in operation would make it ideal for some applications. Some requests may already be out there and I just haven't found them... If anyone has pointers to the following...

1) a DHCP server
2) an SSH daemon - so it can be used as a tunnelling gateway
3) apache / squid or something else as an HTTP proxy (or alternatively I could maybe run OpenVPN or similar)

Finally is there a Perl either on the box or easily available (yes I'm a Perl hacker)...

Don't have the box with me at the moment - have to use Windows on site :(

3MX-rc3.1 has all of that pre installed (not sure about dhcp server though). You could install that or visit : http://www.taitaonline.co.uk/3mx.htm and look under 'extra packages' link. Most will work on the default OS.

Cheers.

Hi there,

Just noticed a few of you guys requesting a faster browser. I was running Debian Etch on my CnMBook for a while and gave Epiphany a spin. It's the older version using the Gecko engine, but I'm glad to report it runs appreciably quicker than Bon Echo on the same set up. It does, however, use up a fair bit of screen real estate. Perhaps this would be a good candidate for porting to the default, retro, and 3MX images?

The speed tweaks found below for "slow computer, fast connection" really make a difference to any Gecko browser. I also found that turning Javascript off unless you really need it makes it zip along a bit better.

I actually gave epiphany a spin on 3mx-rc3 for awhile, but hated the wasted screen space used up by the UI with no way of disabling/shrinking it. I also thought about trying to build midori, galeon, etc, but after realizing how many files and libs they depend on i found them to be rather large in file size (not the executable, but rather all the files required). Similar to firefox's size. I'm quite content with dillo for blazing fast browsing, and iceweasel for 'power browsing' (secure sites/mail/ebay etc). If this was 1995 again, the browsers we have would be smoking fast. Unfortunately javascript, flash, banner ads etc now plague and slow the browsing experience down. The internet and webpages were much simpler in the 90's.

Cheers.
