Skype
« on: February 13, 2009, 09:19:23 PM »
I'm new to the minibook and Linux. I have just got a CnM and wondered if there is any way of getting Skype to work on it.
Thanks

Nope.  :(
Skype isnt open source software, so there is no way to compile it for mips processors. Unless you can convince skype themselves to release a mips version it wont happen.

Not all is lost however as it is possible to compile other voip type software to use as an internet telephone.

Yes,seen it long time before, but its good for nothing. What it does is displaying your Skype contacts, etc provided you got Skype installed already on your machine.

I like the idea of Wicknix not being arrested ;)

Though skype would be nice.

Reverse engineering copyrighted software is no laughing matter.  Plus there are other softwares out there.

From what Wicknix mentioned, there are some available, though I'm guessing they may need to be cross compiled.

It might be worth having a look on google for mips voip software.

Skype seem to be getting a little more open, if they will support a SIP client then it might be possible to get the OneT etc to talk connect to the skype network.

It is not, of course a native client, but might be better than nothing?

Web browser based Skype

Has anyone come across this yet?   http://www.gizmo5.com/pc/opensky/

OpenSky is a free service provided by Gizmo5 which allows any mobile phone, web browser or IP aware phone network (SIP, asterisk, etc) to communicate with Skype users. OpenSky supports sending text messages and voice calls.
It needs flash. If I remember right, wicknix has worked on gnash and has successfully installed on his laptop, albeit it was terribly slow. I wonder if that would be good enough to enable the dial interface? Or is it not everything,is it? There may be other problems too. Anyway,I am not good at it at all,it's just an idea.
