Faster web sites

This may be useful to some...

As well as accessing low graphics versions of sites where possible (eg: www.ebaymobile.co.uk and news.bbc.uk/1/low/uk) I've been trying out www.skweezer.com on some sites. Skweezer is something I've used quite a lot when browsing with my mobile phones/PDAs by stripping out a lot of graphics. It doesn't work with everything but I've found it useful with some sites!

   1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

      network.http.pipelining,
      network.http.proxy.pipelining,
      network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
   2. Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.
   3. Alter the entries as follows:
   4. Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true" by double-clicking it.
   5. Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true" by double-clicking it.
   6. Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to 8 by double-clicking it. This means it will make 8 requests at once. There is no point setting it higher then 8 as it is capped at 8 max. [The default value for this setting is 4]
   7. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.
   8. If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

Sorry Leven, but tried FasterFox and found the add-on overhead negated any speed-up - in fact it seemed slower. I tried this on both the LLL and on the PC running Ubuntu 8.10 and found that both browsers were slower.

Deleting the add-on sped things up to normal again nicely (by still using your c and p values in Reply #1 of this thread  ), and in fact I've got rid of all add-ons on IceWeasel now except for ads.

Or has anyone found different?

Leven, you must be misunderstanding me. The new params given in your Reply #1 do speed things up a lot, thanks for those and I am agreeing with the other posts above.

But FasterFox slows things down because of its overhead, both memory-wise and being attached to a browser that is already just about at the limit without FasterFox attached.

So after my tests I'm saying that IceWeasel is overall slower with FasterFox, and after uninstalling it I went back to the params you gave in your Reply #1 and undoubtedly is faster with those params than without.

But initially it was a good call by you about FasterFox in case it did speed up web sites.....

yes,I misunderstood you,albeit with Fasterfox it's also possible to adjust quite a few settings,but I reckon that you must have tried all the options.
I run IceWeasel on defaults OS,and can't add any plugin whatsoever.Possibly on 3MX it's different.

After a lot of search to increase Firefox/BonEcho usability, I now only use "Noscript" and "Download Helper" addons.
I can do (almost) everything that I do whith a "normal" computer.

- Thanks to Noscript : I don't have problems whith unresponsive scripts any more,
and almost no more ads (so I don't use Adblock Plus which increase startup lenght)...
I disable Noscript for websites that I need (bank, webmail, this forum...).
- Thanks to "Download Helper" I can download and see video from youtube like websites...

The most important thing is that Firefox starts quite quickly (30 sec) and browses fast.
